One of the most well-known products made from this cotton is Peshtemal, which is basically the Turkish version of towels. Dating back to the 14th century, the Peshtemal has been used in traditional Turkish Hammams. Patrons wore a Peshtemal as a simple cover-up—it provided privacy in these relaxing, public, hot steam rooms.
Agricultural workers have been using a Peshtemal as an apron to prevent staining their clothes in the field, in the garden, and at the market. Women have been tying it around the head and neck as a protection from the sun, and as a part of traditional clothing.
Peshtemal Production
The highest quality Peshtemals are made in a small town in the Agean region of Turkey, called Buldan.
Along with modern weaving machines, the traditional hand looms are still used in the production process of Buldan fabric. Turkish Peshtemals have a completely natural look and feel due to the special properties of the fabric.
The fabrics are made from 100% Turkish Cotton, a premium cotton that has extra-long fibers. Longer cotton fibers mean fewer ties during the production process. The result is stronger and smoother cotton threads. Because of this unique material, Turkish Peshtemals become even softer, fluffier, and more absorbent with successive washings.
